January 2012 – it’s been a while!

We have undergone some changes at the Gardens since Susan’s last post in October 2010… not the least of which is that we are now staffed only by volunteers. This has added some challenges but resolved some too.

The Gardens is looking fabulous and we hope you will pop by for a look sometime! Working bees are currently Fridays, 4pm t0 6pm with a shared cuppa and snack after.

Thanks to funding from Nelson City Council we are offering free ‘work and learn’ sessions on plant propagation. Click here to find out more!

Well … the Global Working Bee for Climate Change on 10 October 2010 (10/10/10!) has been and gone.  A keen bunch of nine folk met at Waimarama Community Gardens for a Spring Tidy Up, followed by a shared potluck lunch.    We made a difference by starting on the main path through the Mandala garden, preparing it for bring a layer of cardboard and shell.  Due to lowish numbers – let’s be honest, we were hoping for a few more people to turn up! – we will need to continue this work over the next few weeks.  Can you pop along on Fridays 4 to 6 pm to give a hand?  See below for more information.

We are THRILLED to have Bark Processors Ltd, Lower Queen Street, Richmond and they have provided the shell and bark chips for our paths.  Please support this sponsor by buying their landscape supplies – bark, compost, shell and other products.

You can see here a group of people led by Adrian and Myk, creating a No Dig Bed in our home garden demonstration area a couple of months ago.  Since then, the other beds have been prepared with green manures, mulches and compost and planting has already begun in the perennial bed and the herb garden.

This whole series of beds will include a bee garden, a four bed rotation for different types of vegetables, a companion planting bed, a children’s garden, a square foot garden and so on … do come and see the changes for yourself.
